Vineland Rotary Program Features Littoral Society

Restoring Coastal Waterways

At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Vineland, President Elect Susanna introduced Renee Brecht, from the American Littoral Society.  Brecht is also the area’s Code Blue Coordinator.

American “Littoral” meaning, Coastline or Shoreline, Society, promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat, protects the coast from harm, and empowers others to do the same.

They have many projects they are working on; restoring beaches following Storm Sandy; working with Stockton to monitor projects, creating oyster reefs, and restoring marshes.  They recently received a grant for storm water management on the Cohansey River.

Renee was made aware of the “homeless” population in Cumberland County.  She began an initiative to help provide them with food, shelter, cots and blankets.  The project is known as “Code Blue”  and Millville, Vineland and Bridgeton communities are all participating.  Renee is putting together information for use so any municipality can start their own program.

Renee realized that several organizations were doing similar projects and that there is a need for coordination of services and collaboration to better serve our communities.

The Society will be hosting several seminars to better educate the community in regards to the job of Municipal Clerk, City OPRA requests, Elections and City budgets.  They will also be holding workshops with Realtor, Michele Wheaton, to learn more about Foreclosures, the Millville Housing Authority and Section 8 housing.

Among Brecht’s current volunteer activities are president of the Roebling Museum, member of the Cumberland County Health Advisory Board, interim secretary and chair of the legislative committee of Friends of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge, founder of the Delaware Bayshore Chapter of the N.J. Native Plant Society and a volunteer coordinator of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  Currently, Brecht is program director of the Delaware Bayshore Office of the American Littoral Society, located in Millville.

Thank you Renee for all you do for our community!
